Definition — GHG Protocol Emission Scopes

GHG Protocol Corporate Standard · WRI / WBCSD

The definition comes from the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, developed jointly by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). Procurement primarily drives Scope 3, Category 1 — purchased goods and services — which is why supplier emissions and third-party assurance are tracked in this function.

ScopeDefinitionExample
Scope 1Direct emissions from owned/controlled sourcesCompany vehicle fuel, on-site fuel combustion
Scope 2Indirect emissions from purchased energyElectricity, steam, heating/cooling purchased for own use
Scope 3All other indirect emissions across the value chainSupplier manufacturing emissions, employee travel, product use, waste disposal, logistics

Supplier Drilldown — Scope 3 Contribution

Contribution is driven by two independent factors: how much we spend with the supplier, and how carbon-intensive their delivered goods or services are per unit of spend. Where a supplier provides no primary data, a spend-based proxy factor is applied — conservative by design, so unassured suppliers often screen higher than their true footprint.

Gulf Freight Solutions LLC
Long-haul road and air freight legs; intensity driven by air share of 18% on time-critical lanes.
Nile Construction Partners
Cement and structural steel inputs; no primary data, so a high-emission-factor proxy inflates the estimate.
Emirates Systems Integration
Hardware manufacturing upstream plus data-centre hosting; assurance lapses in Oct 26.
Riyadh Facilities Co.
Consumables and site travel across a dispersed portfolio; limited route optimisation.
Bharat Industrial Supplies
Grid-intensive manufacturing region; activity-code mismatch weakens factor selection.
Meridian Media HK
Print production and event logistics; low intensity but wholly unassured.

Intensity = ktCO₂e per USD m of spend. Share = % of Scope 3 Category 1 total.
